Zammo McGuire’s Health Crisis: Grange Hill Star Confronts Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Former Grange Hill legend Lee MacDonald has sadly revealed that he has been diagnosed with skin cancer.

The actor, 56, who played Zammo McGuire in the hit 1980’s show, announced that he was told he had skin cancer by doctors

after he grew concerned about an ‘unusual’ spot on his face, and eventually went to get it checked.

Taking to Instagram, the much-loved TV star shared his diagnosis with fans.

Lee penned: “Went to the doctors today to check an unusual spot on my face! Doctor says it’s cancer!

As we older please keep an eye on anything unusual and hopefully get it looked at early!!! Booked in to get it sorted over the next couple of day.”

Following Lee’s admission, fans flocked to share their sympathy and support with the actor as they called him ‘brave’ for sharing his diagnosis so soon after finding out. One follower commented: “Thank you for highlighting this Lee. Good luck to you over the next couple of days. You are so brave.”

“Awh Lee, so sorry you’re going through this but you are so strong and you will get through this. Wishing you all the best in the world,” another echoed. “You got this Lee. If anyone has got this, it’s you. We’re all behind you and we all support you so much,” another gushed.

Lee is best known for his role as Zammo. Lee found fame as the heroin-addicted Zammo on the children’s soap, but now runs a key-cutting shop in London.

The actor got engaged to his long-term partner Jess in 2020. At the time, Lee posted a picture of himself and Jess posing with her dazzling engagement ring, as Lee excitedly tweeted: “My partner Jess ‘JUST SAID YES’! Wedding next.” Two years later, the loved-up couple tied the knot alongside their closest family and friends after having to postpone their big day due to the Covid pandemic.

Before he tied the knot, Lee bravely opened up about his secret battle with bipolar for the first time. The Ziggy actor joined the BBC school drama at the age of 15 – but admits he struggled dealing with the fame at such a young age.

Speaking on This Morning back in 2020, George opened up on how he spent years secretly battling an undiagnosed mental health disorder, which left him hospitalised multiple times. George was only diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 43 and didn’t speak to any of his co-stars about his struggles.

On the exact moment George thought something serious might be wrong, he described: “On the Isle of Wight I just started crying for no reason. I’m not a person that cries a lot, but I just found myself breaking down doing scenes and I would just walk away and hide behind a rock. It sounds mad, but just to get composed.”

Having successfully been cast in Grange Hill, George moved to London with his family, but after about four years the pressure started to get to him. George explained: “Things build up. I’m not saying fame is a bad thing, because it can be a good thing, but sometimes it can be a bad thing – you can meet the wrong people. Being recognised everywhere you go, was starting to get to me a bit at that age.”

George wrote about his mental health struggles in his book: “I wrote it as a therapeutic thing more than anything. I found I had time on my hands last year, it was the first time I was out of work for a while. I wrote that book as a warning in a way for people who have got what I’ve got and have been through, or going through, what I have been through. To see where I went wrong and think, ‘God, I won’t do that or I’ll try that what he done.’”

And on how he is now, George said at the time: “That’s the good thing, things are happening for me now. It’s been a long time since I was in hospital, seven or eight years. The phones are going again now, I’m getting scripts, auditions. I take life a lot easier than I used to.”
