Stephen A. Smith has questioned Kelly Stafford after the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew admitted on a recent podcast that she once dated his college backup to make him jealous.
Speaking on the Off the Vine podcast, Kelly revealed that she decided to ‘p*** off’ her future husband – and father of their four children- when he was treating their relationship casually.
And while the incident is far in the past (Stafford finished up his college career in 2008), Smith was incredulous that the passer’s wife would make the episode public.
‘How is it that y’all know that men have egos, and males are ego dominant? But you forget that when it comes to your own man,’ he began on the Stephen A. Smith Show.
‘If you are Mrs. Stafford, what could possibly make you think that it is okay for you to go home, after revealing to the public, ‘I kicked it with his backup.’
‘What possible, possible advantage could you peel from that with a husband of yours with?’
Smith added that he was not ‘casting any aspersions’ on Kelly’s character, as he met her once and considers her to be a ‘nice lady’
Still, he concluded the video by asking, ‘What would make you think that’s okay?’
Stafford and Kelly met at the University of Georgia, where the latter was a cheerleader for the football team.
However, she said that their relationship ‘wasn’t that cute’ initially as she dated his backup to get back at him for not committing to her.
‘I hated him, I loved him,’ Kelly revealed of the early days of their relationship. ‘I dated the back-up (quarterback) to p** him off – which worked.’
She added: ‘He was the bad boy, too. Matthew is so sweet – a southern gentleman, all that stuff. And the back up was the complete opposite and it upset him.’
Kelly added that Stafford and the ‘bad boy’ backup lived in the same dorm, and he would notice her car there.
‘So at one point, he waited and followed me out and got in my car. And wouldn’t get out. I was like: ‘This is amazing, it’s working!’
After she told him to get out of her car, Stafford replied: ‘He’s not right for you’. To which Kelly replied: ‘You can’t tell me that!’
During the 2006 season, Stafford was a freshman who played back-up to Joe Tereshinski III before taking the starting spot. Joe Cox also played quarterback for the Bulldogs that year.
Then, in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Stafford was Georgia’s starting quarterback, with Cox as his back-up.
It is unclear whether either Cox or Tereshinski are the players mentioned by Stafford in her bombshell podcast appearance.
It is interesting to see the dynamics of relationships, even in the past, especially when it involves well-known figures such as Kelly Stafford and Matthew Stafford. The lengths that some people go to in order to make a point or get back at someone can be quite surprising.
One can only imagine the tension and drama that unfolded during those college years at the University of Georgia. Dating the backup quarterback to make the starter jealous is certainly a bold move, to say the least. It’s a good thing that things eventually worked out for Kelly and Matthew, despite the rocky start to their relationship.
Stephen A. Smith’s reaction to Kelly’s revelation brings up an important point about respecting one’s partner and their feelings. While it may have been a long time ago, some things are best left in the past, especially when it comes to airing out personal details in public.
Overall, the story of Kelly and Matthew Stafford’s early relationship serves as a reminder that relationships, no matter how high profile, have their ups and downs. It’s all about how the couple works through those challenges and grows stronger together.
