Behind the Music: Keane’s Tom Shares Shocking Revelations and Throws Shade at Coldplay

Keane frontman Tom Chaplin has had a tumultuous time in the spotlight during his decade-spanning career with the band.

The group became one of Britain’s biggest bands in the early 2000s and even rocketed to fame in the United States.

But in 2013, the band split amid a string of personal issues.

Baby-faced singer Tom stunned fans in 2006 when he admitted he’d checked into a clinic for drink and drug problems following a gruelling tour schedule with his bandmates.

In an interview back in 2016, Tom admitted he’d hit rock bottom and pushed his wife and daughter away as he struggled with his addiction.

He shared: “When I was still in Keane, I was scared of confronting what was going on in my life. I was very self-conscious, I was hiding in plain sight but I was a mess underneath.

I didn’t know how to manage my emotions, so I began self-medicating.”

During those dark periods in his life, Tom spent most of his days locked up in his home and crying in front of the TV. He said he’d despise it when his friends or bandmates would come over to see him and when they did, he would refuse to open the door.

He previously told the Guardian: “My bandmate Tim would come to my house and I’d refuse to answer the door. I was spending a lot of time at home crying in front of Cash in the Attic. I felt really depressed. I was taking a lot of drugs and drinking.”

The singer eventually sought professional help to face his demons after his life spiralled out of control. He added: “I’ve gone through very heavy therapy and psychosis. Everyone has said to me that it must have been so horrible, but I found it to be an adventure.”

The musician – who will release his third solo album ‘Midpoint’ later this year – spent therapy for 10 years and was forced to reflect on his life choices during the height of the pandemic. He recently told the Sun: “For a lot of people it was a very reflective time. It is funny because I have been in therapy for well over 10 years now and I thought at that point, ‘It is probably time I ended this. It feels like a natural cut-off.

“Then during the lockdown I was doing it online but suddenly a lot of questions started to come up in my mind, I think partly to do with that period of reflection.

After making a surprise comeback, Keane are set to seal their triumphant return with a performance at Glastonbury on Saturday alongside other acts including Coldplay.

During an interview with iNews back in 2022, Keane singer Tom caused quite a stir after giving his controversial opinion on the group.

While sharing his thoughts on how the band could improve, the star said: “Where Coldplay have got to now,” he continues, “seeming to chase – oh God, am I going to get into trouble for saying this? – to chase something that’s, well, that’s gone, with all those collaborations and working with certain people… I just feel I’d much rather Chris wrote an album about midlife himself, because I’m sure he’d have a lot to say.”
